First man speed = 6 * 5/18 = 5/3 m/s
Second man speed= 12 * 5/18 = 10/3 m/s
Let the length of train is X meters and its speed is Y m/s
36 = X/(Y-(5/3)) and 40 = X/(Y-(10/3))
108 Y - 180 = 3X ..... (1) and 120Y - 400 = 3X .....(2)
From equation 1 and 2
108Y -180 = 120 Y - 400
120Y-108Y = 400-180
12Y=220
Y= 18.33
then 108(18.33) - 180 = 3X
3X = 1980 - 180 = 1800
X = 600 meters
