Question

Two Indian Railway Trains are moving towards each other with a speed of 40km/hr and 45 km/hr from different stations Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore. When they meet, the second train from station Chennai Egmore has covered 20 km more distance than the first train which starts from station Chennai Central. What is the distance between Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore?

  • 300
  • 320
  • 340
  • 360
Answer- C

Let's call Chennai central as station P and Chennai Egmore as station Q.

The distance between the stations is equal to the sum of the distance covered by each train.

Let the distance covered by first distance = X

So, the distance covered by the second train = X + 20

When the two trains start from two different stations at the same time towards each other, they take same time to meet each other.

Time = Distance/Speed

45X = 40X + 800

45X − 40X = 800

5X = 800

X = 160 km

Then distance covered by second train = 160 + 20 =180 km

So, the distance between stations P and Q = 160 + 180 = 340 km
